Two Divisions of Literature
Prose and Poetry
- is written or spoken language in its ordinary form and without metrical structure.
- is a style of writing that does not follow a strict structure of rhyming and/or meter. It uses normal grammatical structures.
Prose
- is a form of writing that is based on musicality and rhythm. It is often characterized by its use of figurative languages, such as metaphors and similes.
- uses line breaks for various reasons—to follow a formatted rhythm or to emphasize an idea. Lines can run extremely long or be as short as one word or letter
- is typically reserved for expressing something special in an artistic way.
Poetry
- From the Latin word “prosa”, part of the phrase “prosa oratio”, which means straight forward speech or natural flow of speech.
- Written or spoken language in its ordinary form, without metrical structure
- Written in full grammatical sentences, which then constitute a paragraph
Prose
is an imaginative recreation and re-creation of life. It includes short stories and novels.
Literary Genre
Fiction
often referred to as a slice of life is a fictitious narrative compressed into one unit of time, place and action; it deals with a single character interest, single emotion called forth by a single situation.

is a fictitious narrative with a complicated plot; it may have a main plot and one or more sun-plots that develop with the main plot; characters and actions representative of the real life of past or present times are portrayed in a plot; it is made up of chapters.
