What is Art?

What is history?
It is the study of objects in their historical development and stylistic context; genre, design, format, and style
Why study Art history?
- exposure to other humanities subjects
- gives a tangible timeline indicating human creativity and skill and it illustrates human condition.
What is Art appreciation?
- Simply means being able to look at works and form an own opinion.

- Elements- how is it put together
- Organization- how is it composed and organized
- Subject- what is it about
- Style- show temper, mood, and character of the artist and time and place the art is revealed.

- Judgement- how good is the piece of art
What makes a great art work?
Technique- above average skills in creating the work.
Concept- The unique idea that the artist relates to audience
Emotion- should generate human and universal feelings,
Novelty- Uniqueness of material used.
Patronage- Enjoys vast commissions.
Endurance- Stands the test of time, timeless.

Sincerity- Artist intention/ vision are perfectly honest or noble.
Universality- Embodies universal truths
Magnitude- Transcending all other in scale in monumentality.
Virtuosity- Shows skill, mastery, technical ability and style of the artist.
Innovation- being the first in a particular endeavor, style or medium.
Patronage- Enjoys support and admiration of the community or a specific work.
