Division and Differentiation Flashcards
What is a somatic cell?
A somatic cell is any cell in the body other than cells involved in reproduction
What are Germline cells?
Germline cells are gametes (sperm and ova) and they divide to form gametes
How do somatic cells divide? And what do they form
They divide my mitosis and form more somatic cells
How do germline cells divide? And what do they form?
Germline cells divide by mitosis and that produces more germline stem cells.
Germline cells also divide my meiosis to form haploid gametes.
What is cellular differentiation?
Cellular differentiation is the process when a cell expresses certain genes to produce protein characteristics for that type of cell which allows a cell to carry out specialised functions.
What are tissue stem cells involved in?
They are involved in growth, repair and renewal of the cells found in the tissue they are multi potent
Why are tissue stem cells multipotent?
Because they can differentiate into all of the types of cells found in a particular tissue type.
