Diversity of Cells and their Function Flashcards
What are the four steps for preparing tissue for microscopy
Tissue is dehydrated, put into organic solvent, impregnated with wax and then thin sections cut on a microtome
Name the 4 main tissue types
Epithelium, connective, nervous, muscle
Connective tissue forms what of the body?
framework
Muscle are cells are built to do what?
generate force by contracting
Nervous tissue consists of what?
Neurons and their supporting cells
Give 3 functions of epithelia
mechanical barrier, chemical barrier, absorption
Give the 3 cell shapes of epithelia
squamous, cuboidal, columnar
Give the 3 layer structures of epithelia
stratified, pseudostratified, simple
Name the 3 subtypes of connective tissue
soft connective tissue, hard connective tissue, blood and lymph
What are chondrocytes?
cells of cartilage
Name the 3 types of cartilage
hyaline, elastic, fibrocartilage
What makes up the shaft of the bone?
cortical
What makes us the end of the bone? (epiphyses)
cancellous
Name the 3 major muscle types
smooth, cardiac, skeletal
What is smooth muscle also known as?
involuntary or visceral
