Diversity and Selection Flashcards
1
Q
Meiosis
A
A specialised cell division to form gametes
2
Q
Zygote
A
Fusion of 2 gametes
3
Q
Diploid
A
A full set of chromosomes in pairs
4
Q
Haploid
A
Half a set of chromosomes; one of each pair
5
Q
Homologous
A
A pair of chromosomes which have the same genes at the same locus
6
Q
Alleles
A
Different form of a gene
7
Q
Locus
A
Position on a chromosome where a gene is found
8
Q
Why is meiosis needed?
A
- maintain the diploid number of chromosomes
- genetic variation
9
Q
What happens during interphase before Meiosis?
A
DNA replication; 46 strands of DNA become 92Meisosi
10
Q
Explain DNA replication
A
- Semi-conservative replication
- DNA helicase binds to DNA, breaks H-bonds between strands + unwinds double helix
- Free-floating nucleotides bind to complementary bases (H-BONDS)
- Each strand used as template for new complementary strands
- DNA polymerase makes phosphodiester bonds between nucleotides
- 2 new strands synthesised
11
Q
What happens during Meiosis I?
A
- Start with a diploid cell: 2 pairs of homologous chromosomes
- Interphase
Prophase:- Homologous pairs form
