Diversity and inclusion Flashcards

Q

What strategies I use to promote Diversity (racial, LGBTQ, economic, 1st generation), Equity, and Inclusion?

A
  • I emailed the students before the start of the class asking if they use a different name from the one I have in my students list and which pronoun they use
  • > Retention:
  • Arive a little bit earlier and leave a little bit late
  • office hours 1-to-1 meetings
  • I diversify the activities and assessments, providing equal opportunities to all types of learners.
  • Mentorship: As a mentor I try to be attentive to the needs and questions of my mentees, assuring that every student has the best possible conditions to succeed throughout their time at the university. *provide developmental opportunities (i.e., co-authorship for publications or conferences) and feedback on research
  • When I teach ecology (it would work for an introduction to biology), in the final slides I present the most recent research on the subject. I hope it may encourage students of all backgrounds to do research.
  • for programming/data analysis course -> recordings
  • flexible deadlines
  • peer review
  • I also want to make my own research more diverse. One way to do this is to engage with local communities that are in some way related to my research topic, or ecosystem of study, with the intention of reporting more realistic outcomes. This could be done through the development of research aims, data sampling, discussion and/or interpretation of the results in collaboration with these communities.
  • > Recruitment: Researchers in organizational psychology have found that more diverse recruitment advertisements positively impact perceptions of organizational attractiveness, perceived compatibility, and evaluations of the organization’s image.
  • > Promote ally behaviour
  • attending ally and other optional diversity training programs, reading, and staying current on research pertaining to organizational diversity and discrimination, participating in diversity-related events, examining one’s own biases, and the ways in which they may be perpetuating systematic inequalities, and by developing and fostering diverse social support networks.
  • Research has demonstrated that celebrating diversity and taking a multicultural, identity-affirming approach is more beneficial than taking a color-blind approach in which one ignores identity-based differences (Meeussen et al., 2014).
  • Diversity impacts all aspects of one’s experiences and denying this perpetuates systematic disadvantages faced by minority groups
