Diversity Flashcards
Genetic diversity:
-The variety of genes within a species
-The difference in DNA between individuals of that speices
Biodiversity:
-The variety of species in an ecosystem
-The differences in the structure of ecosystems and the genetic differences within species
Heterotroph:
An organism that gets its food by eating other organisms
Autotroph:
An organism that uses sources of energy to produce nutrients from water, gases, and/or minerals
What are species:
All organisms that can breed with each other naturally
Evolutionary change:
Changes that happen in a whole population over a long time and large areas.
Protection example (species interaction)
-Hermit crabs use shells from other dead organisms
-Sea anemones are worn by crabs as “boxing gloves”
Transportation example (species interaction)
Species (like seeds) are carried by other species, either intentionally or accidentally.
Reproduction (species interaction)
-Many species depend on other species in order to reproduce
-Many internal parasites reproduce inside of their host
Hygiene example (species interaction)
Cleaner shrimp eat parasites from other fish
Digestion example (species interaction)
Many types of bacteria live in digestive tracts and are necessary for digesting food
