What changes have occurred in Breckland over the past 100 years?
What is todays appeal of Breckland?
Give examples of the varying views of stakeholders in the Breckland area.
Why is there no doubt that Breckland is a changing place?
The popular image of Norfolk is that of a largely agricultural and prosperous county. This popular perception has been called into question, however. Give evidence to show this.
Which groups have been identified as suffering most from the poverty and deprivation around the small towns of Swaffham and Thetford?
One demographic fact that needs to be stressed is that ethnicity is not a significant characteristic of the rural poor here in Breckland. In 2011 what percent of Breckland’s population was recorded as BAME?
There are certainly plenty of white migrant workers (five per cent of the total population). While they might not live in truly rural areas, they are certainly conspicuous there during the working day, having been transported out of towns such as Swaffham and Thetford by their gangmasters. Where do they mainly come from and what industries do they work in?
Why does the fact that these immigrants are wiling to work for low wages and occupy poor housing do little or nothing to help relieve the rural deprivation?
What is the upside of the change in Breckland?
What tangible aspects of change can be measured?
What are the less tenable aspects that are much more difficult to assess?
