Borough in South East London. Large parts on metropolitan green belt. Penge Beckenham Bromley lie on London rural urban continuum however Biggin Hill lies outside it. 30% of the borough is farmland. Most sparsely populated London borough.
65% Christian. 28% no religion.
77% White British, 15% BAME 2011 decreased from 2001 census where Bromley was 86% White British and 9% were BAME.
85% born in Britain, higher than London average but below national average.
Higher median age than national average - 40.
2nd lowest poverty rate of London boroughs - 15%
Less benefit claimants than other boroughs.

Brent Key Facts

A

Borough in NW London that lies entirely on rural urban continuum. Wembley is London suburbs whereas Willesden is inner city. Significant presence on the tube network. Key landmarks include Wembley Stadium and the Neasden mandir.
Younger than average median age representing working age families moving to the area - 33.
Large migrant community with more residents born outside the borough than in it. Most diverse locality in the UK by birth. Largest Irish and Brazillian communities in the UK.
Between 2001 and 2011 the white British community dropped from 29% to 17%. Could be due to percieved cultural dilution in the borough as pubs and churches close to make way for temples and mosques resulting in White flight to commuter towns. The Indian community accounts for 18% of the population settling in the suburbs of Kingsbury and Wembley. Black communities have established in other areas of Harlesdon and Kendal Green.
Wembley has 86% of residents identifying as BAME while Queen’s Park only has 37%
41% christian, 18% muslim, 18% hindu.
Neasden mandir was once the largest Hindu madir outside of India. Seen as Britain’s first authentic Hindu temple. Also home to JFS, the largest Jewish school in Europe.
4th worst level of child poverty in London and poverty level is 33%

A

Village in Kent. Lies on southeastern main line connecting it to London Bridge in under an hour. Means it is ideal for commuters.
Large young and elderly population however dip in population of working age people as they leave for the city and jobs. High number of 40-60 year olds showing older proffessionals moving to the village.
96% white with very few BAME residents. Majority of town christian.

A

remote village in Snowdonia Wales
2011 population of 455 significant decrease on 2001 census population 617. Sparse population density. Tourist attraction due to location in Snowdonia.
Beddgelert has an aging population with very few young people and a large proportion of elderly residents. More people over the age of 80 than in there 20s. Due to a number of push factors such as poor education and employment oppurtunities.
The village is almost entirely white and christian.
Child poverty rate is 23.5%.
The lowest average in Wales and 3rd lowest in UK.
Lots of village work is in the tourism industry.

Recent headlines regard crime. Town has a theatre and lots of pubs. Local football team establishes sense of community.
Average house price is 550,000 which is double the national average. Contributed to Bromley’s aged population as young people cannot afford to stay in the area with high house prices - this will impact Bromley’s sense of place in the long term.
3 Conservative MPs 1 labour MP - labour MP in Penge - distinctly different sense of place. Penge is 65% white while the borough as a whole is 84% white.
Bromley is in close proximity to London which potentially dilutes the areas sense of place.

Recent news articles surrounding Brent are largely positive perceptions of place indicating a strong sense of community in the borough.
Borough is labour majority - all 3 MPs are labour. May be due to high poverty rate in the area.
The borough is spending 40 million on building new council houses.
Conflicting sense of place due to its diversity - Wembley and Willesden have 2 very different identities.
Average house price in Brent is 650,000, 2.5x the national average. Due to Brents ideal location and transport links for commuting into London. Majority of properties sold in recent years have been flats.

Regeneration Brent

A

Wembley Park regeneration biggest build to rent site in the UK. Wembley Park development created over 1000 jobs and attracts over 7 million visitors every year.
26 story tower block in Alperton offering social housing. Project recieved mixed reaction with some suggesting that there are already empty flats in the area and more don’t need to be built. Others see it as a good thing as it will bring local businesses and shops to the area.
Much of the borough is in need of regeneration due to the areas deprivation levels. 77% of the borough is in the top 10% of most deprived areas in the country with regards to housing and services. The ward Stonebridge is the 2nd most deprived ward in the country.

Increased as a result of economic sanctions against Russia as a result of military intervention in Ukraine.
Property bought in Belgravia, Kensington and Mayfair.
Many don’t live in the UK and it is simply to transfer money to the UK.
Russian presence in London is mostly extremely wealthy people using UK as a safe haven for money.

Deptford - Pepys Estate

A

Completed in 1973 containing 1324 homes accross 3 24 story tower blocks.
In 2002 5 mid rise housing blocks were demolished and replaced with 7 housing blocks managed by a social landlord. 222 tenants displaced and not offered right to return.
Tension developing between original residents and new residents. More young professionals and families moving in has resulted in changing local shops and businesses.

Most deprived of Scotlands major cities. Contains 15% of most deprived areas in Scotland. Internal tensions developing in areas of poverty, particularly in areas of high ethnic diversity which has increased significantly in recent years.
42% of Anderston born outside of Scotland.
Many white British believe that the concentration of ethnic minorities is responsible for high unemployment rates and a dilution of Scottish culture.

Breckland

A

Once covered by heathland. Character of area has changed considerably due to planting of Thetford Forest and use of modern farming technology to make infertile land more agriculturally productive. Low population density.
Some areas of severe deprivation, such as in Kings Lynn and Great Yarmouth.
People struggling in Breckland are older people living alone relying on state pension, low paid manuel workers and their families.
Ethnicity not a significant characteristic of rural poor.
