Distinctive Landscapes Case Study The Jurassic Coast Flashcards
Why is the Dorset coast line know as the Jurassic coast
Because of all the fossils dating back to that time
Where is the Dorset coast ?
On the south east daisy of England
What landform would you find atDurdle door
An arch
Arches are formed on headlands of more resistant rock , name the rock type at Dursley door
Limestone
What processes of erosion are attacking the headland at Durdle door
Hydraulic action and abradion
How is an arch formed ?
Waves open up a weakness/ crack in the headland this becomes a cave and over time the sea breaks right throw to form an arch
What sub Aerial process are also taking place on the headland helping to break it down ?
Mechanical weathering like freeze thaw and salt weathering as well as chemical weathering
How was Lulworth cove formed ?
A gap was eroded in the hard limestone allowing the sea in to erode the softer clays behind forming a sheltered bay
What is a tombola ?
A spit that joins the mainland to an island
The spit at the end of chesil beach joins the land to which island ?
Portland bill
What is longshore drift?
This is when the waves following the direction of the prevailing wind hit the coast carrying material in land and then the backwash carries the material blackout to sea at right angles so material zig zags along the coast
What is old Harry and his wife ?
A stack and stump
What rock are old Harry and his wife made out of ?
Chalk
Explain how the geology of the Dorest coast make it distinctive
The coastline is made from bands of hard and soft rocks which have been eroded at different rates, soft rocks like sandstone and clay are easily eroded while limestone and chalk erode more slowly
