Distance, displacement, speed and velocity Flashcards
Displacement
Is a distance travelled in a certain direction.
Distance
How far an object has moved. It is scalar quantity, so it does not involve direction.
Speed
How fast is the object moving.
Velocity
Is a speed in a given direction.
Acceleration
Is the change in velocity in a certain amount of time. (m/s2)
Deceleration
Change of velocity per second when an object slows down.
Uniform acceleration
Constant acceleration
Acceleration equation
a = Δv(change in velocity) / t (time)
The acceleration of an object can be calculated from…
the gradient of the velocity-time graph.
The acceleration of an object is:
- proportional to the resultant force on the object
- inversely proportional to the mass of the object
Formula for acceleration
m/s2 = change in velocity(m/s) / time taken for change (s)
