Dissolved gasses Flashcards
1
Q
Oxygen in the ocean
A
-produced by: photosynthesis
- dissolved in water (DO)
measured in parts per million (ppm)
- high at surface due to lots of photosynthetic life (algae), few animals, and waves folding O2 into the water
- as depth increases, DO decreases until 500 meters (O2 minimum zone - 8% of ocean) due to less algae, more animals (High respiration), and increased decay of tiny organisms
- at 500 meters, DO increases slightly because currents bring O2 down from surface (down welling), less animal life that requires O2, and cold dense water that holds dissolved gases better
2
Q
Carbon dioxide in the ocean
A
- Consumed by photosynthesis
- Dissolved in water (DCD)
Measured in parts per million (PPM) - low at surface due to lots of photosynthetic life (algae) using CO2, and few animals producing it
- as depth increases, DCD increases due to less photosynthesis (b/c there is less light), more animals (more respiration), and cold, dense water that holds dissolved gases better
