Characteristics of living things Flashcards
1
Q
Reproduction (6 Characteristics)
A
- sexual; two cells from different organisms combine
- asexual; single organism can reproduce without another - e.g. budding in sponges
2
Q
Obtain and use energy (6 Characteristics)
A
- anabolism; build up of complex molecules from simple ones
- catabolism; breaking down complex molecules into simple ones
- balance of the two = metabolism
3
Q
Grow and develop (6 Characteristics)
A
- as organisms grow in size, many change their appearance and develop
- eg. caterpillar grows and develops into a butterfly
- Some crustaceans add legs as they mature
4
Q
Are highly organized (6 Characteristics)
A
- made of cells, either unicellular or multicellular (specific structure performs specific function)
5
Q
Respond to environment (6 Characteristics)
A
- short term
- homeostasis; ability of an organism to maintain conditions in the body suitable for life by responding to stimuli
- e.g. sweat when hot, shiver when cold
6
Q
Adapt to environment
A
- long term
- physical, mental and behavioral changes to survive and thrive in environment
- evolution
