Dispersion and Ecological Measurement Flashcards
3 types of dispersion
Clumped
Uniform
Random
Dispersion
How individuals are spaced in a population
Clumped
Separated in chunks, ex: humans, fish
Uniform
Laid out in perfect order, ex: birds
Random
Randomly spread out, ex: bears, sloths
Reasons for estimating population size
Prevent overpopulatin
Prevent extinction
Determine carrying capacity
3 ways to estimate population size
Random sampling
Point intercept
Capture mark and recapture (Lincoln-Petersen index)
Random sampling
Divide area into equal quadrants, randomly select a few quadrants and count all organisms in selected quadrants, find average of those then multiply the average by total number of quadrants
Point intercept
Draw a line 10 meters out, count every organism that falls in the line, multiply number of organisms on the line by total square area
Capture mark-recapture (Lincoln-Petersen index)
Capture small amount of organisms and mark them, release back into wild, overtime recapture more and keep track of how many have the markings, then multiply marked by total amount captured divided by amount recaptured with mark
