Disorders part 1 Flashcards
Dementia
Brain syndrome that causes progressive deterioration and function
Common causes of delirium
- Drug effect
- Toxic substances
- Metabolic
- Infections
- AIDS
- Traumatic brain injury
- Post surgery
Features of Charles Bonnet syndrome
Usually occurs in people with mild to moderate dementia
Involves hallucinations of inanimate objects coming to life
Features of hallucinations with delirium
- usually visual
- Nonsystemized
- Somatic
Features of nonsystemized delusions
No built up story around them
Symptoms of clouding of consciousness
- In and out of reality
- confused state
- dreamlike
Clinical features of delirium
- Clouding of consciousness
- Restless/agitation
- Lethargy/unresponsive ness
- Nonsystemized delusions
- Hallucinations
- Emotion:fear
- Thought and speech slow and disorganized
Multi-infaret dementia (MID)
- Progressive
- Step wise progression
- If caught in early stages can be slowed
- Treat by lowering risk factors
Cortical atrophy of Alzheimer’s
- Looks like cerebral cortex is shrinking
- Build up of amyloid plaques
- Cholingegic neurons effected first
Features of dementia
- Presents after age 40 and 50
- The earlier it presents the more rapidly it progresses
- More common in females
- Some forms are inherited
- Individuals with down syndrome develop Alzheimer’s like changes in their brain mid age
- Language problems occur very early
- Average course of disease is about 7 years
Symptoms of restlessness/agitation
- May be fearful
2. Formication (illusion of insects/rats/bugs crawling on ones body
Definition of sub cortical dementias
- Phrenia-mid
2. Caudal-tail/near posterior of body
Characteristics of sub cortical dementias
- Don’t involve cerebral cortex
2. Don’t get prominent aphasias until late stages
Brain regions involved in sub cortical dementias
- Thalamus
- Basal ganglia
- Brain stem
General signs of sub cortical dementias
- Emotional liability then proceeds apathy, depression, slowing of cognition, lack of spontaneous movement/activity
- Memory issues
- Insight to disability is preserved
- Impaired organizational planning
- Functional impairment diminished by emotional impairment
Parkinson’s
- Involves basal ganglia
- Affects the sustania nigra, the dopamine factory
- Resting tremor, lessening of spontaneous movement, gait
Stage 3 of Alzheimer’s
- True agnosias, apraxias, aphasias
- Decrease in spontaneous speech
- Comprehension deficit, echolalia
- Compulsive behaviors
- Corphological (imaginary lent)
- Babinotou reflex
Three predictors of conduct disorders
- Enuresis (bed wetting at inappropriate age)
- Fire setting (pyromania)
- Cruel to animals
Reading disorder
- Disorder of expression
- Not illiterate
- Unable to it and absurb information
Writing disorder
- Dyslexia (trouble distinguishing letters)
2. Sentence comprehension
