Causes of paralysis of swallowing and esophagus mechanism

A
  1. NERVE DAMAGE : Results from damage to 5th,9th or 10th cranial nerve.
  2. BRAIN DAMAGE: Due to poliomyelitis, encephalitis
  3. MUSCLE DYSFUNCTION: paralysis due to failure of neuromuscular transmission e.g Myasthenia gravis or botulism

Achalasia

A
  • Occurs due to failure of lower esophageal sphincter to relax
  • Swallowed food builds up, stretching the esophagus over months and years
  • The esophagus becomes markedly enlarged leading to stasis of food particles
  • leads to dysphagea, infections, malnutrition and cancer

  1. Gastritis.Causes.
A
  • Inflammation of the Gastric mucosal causing atrophy. It can be acute and severe with ulcerative excoriation of stomach mucosa that damage mucosal barrier

Causes:

  1. Chronic bacterial infection
  2. Irritant substance e.g alcohol, aspirin, cigarette smoking and steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs
