Disorder of motor behavior Flashcards
catatonia - excitement
extreme purposeless motor activity
cataplexy
Episodic loss of motor & postural control precipitated by laughter or strong emotions / momentary loss of voluntary motor power including speech, w/o loss of consciousness or postural tone
mannerisms
affected/exaggerated behavior; associated with malingering (exaggerate or feign illness in order to escape duty or work)
automatisms
repetitive, unconscious behaviors such as lip-smacking, swallowing, or sleepwalking; can be seizure related or side-effect of meds like zolpidem (ambien)
psychomotor agitation
unintentional and purposeless motions that stem from mental tension and anxiety of an individual. Associated w/ withdrawl symptoms, OCD, major depressive disorder, and manic phase bi-polar DZ
retardation
slowing-down of thought and a reduction of physical movements: depressed emotional response and affect, & slowed speech; seen in: depression, depressive phase of bi-polar DZ, use of benzo’s and anti-psychotic meds.
somnambulism
Repeated episodes of rising from bed during sleep and walking about usually during the first third of the major sleep episode; blank stare and unresponsive; awakened w/ great difficulty; no memory of incident; not due to the direct physiological effects of a substance
akathisia
An inner feeling of restlessness, an inability to sit still, and a compulsion to move about. Most prominent in LE’s; neuroleptic medications, and the “restless legs” syndrome
catatonia - withdrawn
negativism, mutism, rigidity, posturing, waxy flexibility, and stupor
catatonia
EMERGENCY - must rule out encephalitis & other physiologic causes of delirium! Characterized by either excitement OR withdrawal
