selective inattention
Habitual lack of attention towards unpleasant or anxiety-provoking stimuli
hypervigilance
A state of excessive alertness, manifested by a maintaining an abnormal awareness of environmental stimuli
Flat affect
the absence or near absence of emotional response to a situation
observed in schizophrenia and some depressive disorders
Labile affect
rapid changes in emotion unrelated to external events or stimuli
dysphoric mood
depression and unrest without apparent cause; a mood of general dissatisfaction, restlessness, anxiety, discomfort, and unhappiness
euphoric mood
An exaggerated feeling of well-being or elation
euthymic mood
pertaining to a normal mood in which the range of emotions is neither depressed nor highly elevated
expansive mood
lacking restraint in the expression of feelings, esp in having delusions of grandeur or being inclined to overvalue oneself or one’s work
pressured speech
Rapid and copious talk, often loud and difficult to interrupt. A hallmark of bipolar disorder’s manic phase, or sometimes of schizophrenia
sensory aphasia
Wernicke (damage to Left temporal lobe) - one’s ability to comprehend spoken or written words, and to process words into thoughts, is severely impaired. Repetition is intact, and speech sounds fluent, but phrases uttered are generally meaningless.
motor aphasia
Broca (damage to Left frontal lobe) - effects language output but not comprehension, inability to process thoughts into speech due to neurological damage; although those with motor aphasia may also be able to repeat words and phrases
global aphasia
Combined motor and sensory aphasia; language expression and comprehension are severely affected; patients are generally mute or make limited, repetitive vocalizations.
