What are the two types of hair follicles? Which gives rise to what hair?
- Terminal - thicker and larger hair
- Vellus - more fine and short hair
What are four stages of hair growth?
- Anagen (growing - most of our hair on head)
- Catagen (Transition)
- Telegen (Resting)
- Exogen (shedding)
What are three causes of “buckets” of hair loss?
- Disorders of hair cycling
- Inflammatory conditions (damage to hair follicles)
- Hair shaft abnormalities (inherited or acquired)
What is the division of hair loss based on reversibility?
- Scarring alopecia (irreversible cessation of hair growth and permanent hair loss)
- nonscarring alopecia (not permanent, regrowth possible)
- structural hair disorders (chemicals, heat, can be reversible)
What is a Hypertrichosis?
It is an excessive hair growth anywhere on the body - often where usually do not grow.
What are the three types of alopecia?
- Androgenic/androgenetic Alopecia
- Traction Alopecia
- Alopecia Areata
Which alopecia type is caused by autoimmune disease? How is hair lost in that case?
- Alopecia Areata
Patient presents with hair loss on the entire head, including eyebrows.
- Alopecia Areata Totalis
Patient presents with hair loss throughout the entire body.
- Alopecia Areata universalis
Patient presents with a random patches of hair loss.
- Alopecia Areata (general no progression)
How does one diagnose alopecia areata during a clinical visit?
Can be done by hair pull test. Grabbing about 60 hair. If more than 6 hair easily come out with a light tug - test is positive.
