Diseases of Eye Flashcards
What is myopia?
Myopia is nearsightedness; rays converge in front of the retina. Corrected with a diverging lens.
What is hyperopia?
Hyperopia is farsightedness; rays converge behind the retina. Corrected with a converging lens.
What is astigmatism?
Astigmatism is caused by an irregularly shaped cornea; in some cases, it is caused by lens (lenticular astigmatism). Corrected with eyeglasses. Astigmatism causes near and farsightedness.
What is a cataract?
A cataract does not cause pain, redness, or tearing. It occurs when the inner lens of the eye becomes darkened or opaque. The lens may be surgically replaced with a plastic lens, which is of fixed focal length and not capable of accommodation.
What is aphakia?
Aphakia is the absence of the lens of the eye, causing a loss of accommodation, farsightedness (hyperopia), and a deep anterior chamber. Complications include detachment of the vitreous or retina, and glaucoma.
What is glaucoma?
Glaucoma is a group of diseases that damages the optic nerve, potentially leading to blindness if not treated early. It is due to a build-up of pressure in the eye.
What is presbyopia?
Presbyopia is a condition associated with aging that results in progressively worsening ability to focus clearly on close objects. It is due to hardening of the lens of the eye.
What is amblyopia?
Amblyopia, commonly referred to as a ‘lazy eye’, is due to a damaged nerve pathway in the brain during childhood and may lead to blindness if not treated early.
