Canine Distemper
A viral disease, can be fatal, physical and mental symptoms (can be mistaken for rabies), DAPP vaccine
Feline Distemper
Potentially deadly disease, panleukopenia. FVRCP vaccine.
Feline Leukemia (FeLV)
Virus, immunodeficiency, cancer, death. Vaccine available.
Bordatella
Kennel Cough
Respiratory infection, bacterial, usually dogs, common in boarding, vaccine is oral or injectable.
Leptospira (leptospirosis)
Bacteria, mostly dogs, liver or kidney failure, passed through urine, contagious to humans, vaccine covers 4 of 9 strains.
Lyme Disease
Bacterial, carried by ticks, does not move between species but humans can get it from ticks too, vaccine for dogs.
Rabies
Viral, transmitted though bites, most species can catch it, usually fatal. Vaccinate.
Canine Influenza
Viral, starts with nasal discharge & coughing, can cause fatal respiratory disease, vaccinate.
Heartworm
Parasite that lives in the hearts of dogs (sometimes cats). Carried by mosquitoes. Test & provide prevention.
Roundworms & hookworms
Intestinal parasite carried by pets, contagious to humans.
Whipworms
Intestinal parasite, NOT contagious to humans.
Tapeworm
Parasite acquired by eating fleas or raw prey
Clostridium
Bacteria causes diarrhea in pets, can be seen in fecal smear using LPWC microscope
Campylo-bacter
Bacteria causes diarrhea in pets AND humans, seen using fecal smear.
Giardia
Bacteria cause diarrhea in pets and humans, fecal smear or IDEXX Illness Fecal Test.
