Disease of the Day - BLAD Flashcards
1
Q
Which cattle breed is prone to BLAD?
A
Holsteins
2
Q
What is the cause of BLAD?
A
Mutant, non-functional integrin proteins.
3
Q
True or False: Heterozygotes for BLAD do not express the disease.
A
TRUE
4
Q
What does BLAD stand for?
A
Bovine Leukocyte Adhesion Deficiency
5
Q
Describe the pathogenesis of BLAD
A
Neutrophils cannot bind tightly to endothelial cells and thus cannot perform diapedesis to reach target tissues. The animal usually dies from bacterial infections.
6
Q
Why might the CBC of an animal with BLAD show an extreme neutrophilia?
A
The body responds to an infection by increasing neutrophil production. However, neutrophils are unable to leave the blood stream to reach infection sites.
