Disease and condition Flashcards
atelectasis
a complete or partial collapse of the entire lung or area (lobe) of the lung
Pneumonectomy
Remove the whole lung , cut thru the bronchus
Pneumothorax
Collapsed lung
Bronchiectasis
Permanent widening and scarring of the airways of the lungs, leading to a build-up of excess mucus that can make the lungs more vulnerable to infection
Hypoxaemia
a decrease in the partial pressure of oxygen in the blood (PaO2 <8kPa)
(Normal Arterial PaO2 = 10-12 kPa)
↓ O2
Normal Arterial PaO2
10-12 kPa
Hypercapnia
Build up of carbon dioxide in your bloodstream (↓O2 + ↑CO2)
Type 1 respiratory failure
Lung failure (pt is breathing) -- ↓ O2 To diagnose — ABG test
Type 2 respiratory failure
Pump failure (pt not breathing properly) ↓O2 + ↑CO2
CO2 (carbon dioxide) narcosis
condition that develops when excessive CO2 is present in the bloodstream, leading to a depressed level of consciousness.
haemoptysis
coughing of blood
aneurysm
weakening and bulging of an artery wall
Cystic fibrosis
a progressive, genetic disease that causes persistent lung infectionsand limits the ability to breathe over time.
Asthma
Respiratory condition often marked by exacerbations of symptoms as a result of hypersensitivity to a trigger. Bronchospasms and tightening of the airway often produce the symptoms.
emphysema
- a lung condition that causes shortness of breath
- inner walls of the air sacs weaken and rupture — creating larger air spaces instead of many small ones
- a type of COPD
