Q

How does the body protect against infection

A

Skin prevents entry
scabs form when cut
stomach acid kills bacteria
Mucus lines airways to trap dirt and cilia sweep it out of airways to be swallowed

12
Q

Describe the role of the phagocyte

A

Phagocytes will surround and engulf the pathogen
they break it down making it harmless

13
Q

Describe role of lymphocyte

A

Lymphocytes are specific
they will produce antibodies that will attach onto the antigen on the surface of pathogen
This causes the pathogens to clump together making it easier for phagocytes to engulf

14
Q

What is an antigen

A

A molecule on the surface of a cell - the body recognises its own antigens on its own cells.
If infected with a pathogen the antigens are different and the body starts an immune response

16
Q

What is a vaccine

A

A dead or inactive micro organism that is injected and stimulates the body to produce antibodies

17
Q

What are many vaccines used to protect against

A

Viruses e.g. flu vaccine, covid vaccine, measles vaccine

18
Q

What does a painkiller do

A

It relieves from symptoms of disease but does not cure you

19
Q

What does an antibiotic do

A

It will be taken to destory a bacterial infection only - does not work on viruses
