What is the characterization of atherosclerosis?
Accumulation of cholesterol, infiltration of macrophages into the vessel wall, proliferation of smooth muscle cells, accumulation of connective tissue components, and formation of thrombus.
What is atherosclerosis caused by?
an excessive inflammatory and fibroproliferative response.
How does atherosclerosis cause damage?
Plaques cause damage by narrowing the lumen of the blood vessel, which compromises blood flow to a tissue or by rupturing and triggering formation of a blood clot, which blocks blood flow.
