Discussion - Population Structure of the UK Flashcards
Describe the UK’s population pyramid
The 2019 population pyramid for the UK is convex, showing that there is a decreasing birth rate and a low death rate unlike Nigeria. Currently, the UK has just 23.9% of its population in the elderly independents sector (figure 1) whereas Nigeria has just 2.7% of its population in this sector. This gives a range of 21.2% between the 2 countries.
What does Map 1 show?
Map 1 shows a stark contrast in the number of illiterate women in the UK and Nigeria. Nigeria has far more illiterate women than the UK in proportion to the rest of the world.
Describe the differences in life expectancy between the UK and Nigeria.
The UK has a life expectancy of 82 years. In contrast, Nigeria has a life expectancy of 52 years (graph 1) creating a range of 30 years in the life expectancies of the 2 countries.
Give a reason for the low birth rate in the UK
One reason for the low birth rate in the UK, illustrated by map 1, is that women are well educated and often career driven as a result; they are likely to prioritise their career over having lots of kids.
Give a political reason for the low death rate in the UK
The National Health Service (NHS) provides free, quality healthcare which means that chronic illnesses such as heart disease and cancer caused by poor diet can be well treated.
