Discuss the following equipment used in ship handling/navigation Flashcards
aBinoculars:
Stadimeter:
Used to get the distance to another object, usually a ship, when you know the other objects height
Sextant:
Used for celestial navigation
Bearing Circle:
Obtain the bearing of another vessel or an object
Telescopic Alidade:
Obtain bearings of objects
Voyage Management System:
Electronic chart program used to track where in the world the ship is

Chart:
Shows ocean areas and shorelines used to navigate the open waters.
Gyrocompass:
Compass the ship uses to drive specific directions where 000º is true north.
Digital Fluxgate Magnetic Compass:
Backup to the gyrocompass, allows the ship to maintain a course based on known magnetic variation.
Radar:
used for situational awareness by displaying contacts and land masses
Fathometer:
Determines the depth of water. One fathom is equal to six feet of depth.
Global Positioning System (GPS):
Primary means of navigating the ship.
Laser Range Finder:
Equipment that determines the range to a target through laser reflection
Integrated Bridge System:
Combines multiple systems into one overarching navigation system
Automatic Identification System:
identify a ships position, course, and speed at any point.
