Discriminative Test Flashcards

1
Q

What can Discriminative Test can be use for?

A

Discrimination test can be used to address a variety of practical objectives. In some cases researchers are interested in demonstrating that two samples are perceptibly different. In other cases, researchers want to determine if two samples are sufficiently similar to used interchangeably.
In yet another set of cases some researchers want to demonstrate a difference while other researchers involved in the same study want to demonstrate similarity.

Q

What is - Overall of Difference Test? - (3)

A

Does a sensory difference exist between samples?

Those tests are designed to show whether subjects can detect any difference at all between samples

Sensory dimension is unknown (meaning it is unclear how the products may differ)

Q

How to apply - Overall difference Test? -

A

To determine whether any product differences result from a change in ingredients, processing, packaging or storage

To determine whether an overall difference exists, where no specific attributes can be identified as having been affected

To determine whether two samples are sufficiently similar to be used interchangeably

To select and train panelists and to monitor their ability to discriminate between samples

Q

What is - Attribute Difference Test? - (3)

A

How does attribute X differ between samples

Subjects are asked to concentrate on a single attribute (or a few attributes). All other attributes are ignored.

Sensory dimension expected, suggested, known

Q

How to apply - Attribute Difference Test -

A

To determine whether or not, or the degree to which two or more samples differ with respect to one defined attribute.

It may be a single attribute such as sweetness, a combination of several related attributes, such as freshness, or an overall evaluation, such as preference.

Q

Basic Characteristics of Difference Test

A

Forced choice
Chance probability of being rightis high
Need statistics and distributions to indicate chance of finding the result (statistical table: tables of correct judgment and p-values: 17.7-17.14; Xsquare: table 17.5; Normal distribution and Z-test: table 17.2
