Discovering Dna Structure Flashcards
What are the four nitrogen bases ?
Guanine —–3H+—cytosine
Adosine —-2+—-Thymine
Ladder and sides of DNA
Dioxyribose
And phosphate
The steps or rungs of DNA
Are made up of nitrogenous bases held together by H+ bonds
Define the term telomere?
DNA chain of chemical code made of the 4 bases
Protect our genetic data make it possible for cells to divide
(Like the plastic part on the end of a shoelace)
Telomerase
Adds bases to the end of telomeres in young cells, keeps telomeres from wearing down.
As cells divides repeatedly there is not enough telomerase so the telomeres grow shorter and the cells age.
How is telomerase related to cancer?
- Cell becomes cancerous and divided more often and the telomeres became very short
- to prevent this a cell can become cancerous then activate telomerase which prevents telomeres from getting shorter
How might telomerase be used to slow the aging process?
Extend lifespan of DNA by preserving or restoring the length of telomers with telomerase
What makes DNA
Deoxyribose
Nitrogen base
Phosphate
What is oxidative stress? What is glycation?
Factors of aging
Oxidative stress= damage to DNA, proteins, and lipids caused by oxidants
Glycation= happens when glucose sugar from food binds to some of our DNA, proteins, and lipids. Leaving them unable to do there jobs
