Discipleship: 8 Virtues Flashcards

1
Q

Why is behaviour change insufficient

A

Behaviour is an identity performance

You do what you do
Because you are what you are,
To change what you do,
You need to Co-operate with God to change what you are

5 But also for this very reason, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue, to virtue knowledge, 6 to knowledge self-control, to self-control [a]perseverance, to perseverance godliness, 7 to godliness brotherly kindness, and to brotherly kindness love. 8 For if these things are yours and abound, you will be neither barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Q

Saving Faith: Signs that a person is unsaved and Alienated from God

A

According to Matthew 7:15-20, both the unbeliever and the believer can be known by their “fruit” or behaviour.

15 “Beware of false prophets who come disguised as harmless sheep but are really vicious wolves. 16 You can identify them by their fruit, that is, by the way they act. Can you pick grapes from thornbushes, or figs from thistles? 17 A good tree produces good fruit, and a bad tree produces bad fruit. 18 A good tree can’t produce bad fruit, and a bad tree can’t produce good fruit. 19 So every tree that does not produce good fruit is chopped down and thrown into the fire. 20 Yes, just as you can identify a tree by its fruit, so you can identify people by their actions.

The spirit of God gives believers a Love for God, His word, His people, and for rightiousness. Without the spirit of God, there is:

  1. No love for God

John 15:18
18 “If the world hates you, remember that it hated me first.

1 Corinthians 12:3
So I want you to know that no one speaking by the Spirit of God will curse Jesus, and no one can say Jesus is Lord, except by the Holy Spirit.

  1. No love for or understanding of God’s Word

Psalm 119:72
72 The law from your mouth is more precious to me
than thousands of pieces of silver and gold.

1 Coriinthians 1:18
18 The message of the cross is foolish to those who are headed for destruction! But we who are being saved know it is the very power of God.

1 Corinthians 2:14
14 The person without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God but considers them foolishness, and cannot understand them because they are discerned only through the Spirit.

John 8:43-44
43 Why can’t you understand what I am saying? It’s because you can’t even hear me! 44 For you are the children of your father the devil, and you love to do the evil things he does. He was a murderer from the beginning. He has always hated the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, it is consistent with his character; for he is a liar and the father of lies.

1 John 4:6
6 We are from God, and whoever knows God listens to us; but whoever is not from God does not listen to us. This is how we recognize the Spirit[a] of truth and the spirit of falsehood.

  1. No Love for God’s people.

1 John 13:35
35 By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”

1 John 4:20
20 If someone says, “I love God,” but hates a fellow believer,[a] that person is a liar; for if we don’t love people we can see, how can we love God, whom we cannot see?

Matthew 10:22
22 And all nations will hate you because you are my followers.[a] But everyone who endures to the end will be saved.

John 15:19
19 The world would love you as one of its own if you belonged to it, but you are no longer part of the world. I chose you to come out of the world, so it hates you.

  1. Love for sin

Romans 8:13-14
13 For if you live by its dictates, you will die. But if through the power of the Spirit you put to death the deeds of your sinful nature,[a] you will live. 14 For all who are led by the Spirit of God are children[b] of God.

1 John 3:6 6
No one who lives in him keeps on sinning. No one who continues to sin has either seen him or known him.

1 John 3:8
8 But when people keep on sinning, it shows that they belong to the devil, who has been sinning since the beginning. But the Son of God came to destroy the works of the devil.

1 John 3:9
9 No one who is born of God will continue to sin, because God’s seed remains in them; they cannot go on sinning, because they have been born of God.

Q

Saving Faith: What does it take to have a “Saving faith”

A

According to Rom 3:21-29, It is by acknowledging that we are sinners, for which the penalty is death, and through believing that Jesus paid the penalty of our sin, by sacrificing His life and by shedding His blood. By Accepting the Lord’s sacrifice as a free gift of Grace from God.

  1. Acknowledge before God, that you are a sinner, worthy of eternal death in hell, for choosing to sin against God, by turning to your own ways and by doing what is right in your own sight
  2. Ask God for the offer of Salvation, that Jesus gives to ANYONE who asks to be forgiven. Ask God to forgive you of your sin

Romans 10:13
For “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”

Romans 3:21-19 - Becoming Right with God

A

21 But now God has shown us a way to be made right with him without keeping the requirements of the law, as was promised in the writings of Moses[i] and the prophets long ago. 22 We are made right with God by placing our faith in Jesus Christ. And this is true for everyone who believes, no matter who we are.

23 For everyone has sinned; we all fall short of God’s glorious standard. 24 Yet God, in his grace, freely makes us right in his sight. He did this through Christ Jesus when he freed us from the penalty for our sins. 25 For God presented Jesus as the sacrifice for sin. People are made right with God when they believe that Jesus sacrificed his life, shedding his blood. This sacrifice shows that God was being fair when he held back and did not punish those who sinned in times past, 26 for he was looking ahead and including them in what he would do in this present time. God did this to demonstrate his righteousness, for he himself is fair and just, and he makes sinners right in his sight when they believe in Jesus.

27 Can we boast, then, that we have done anything to be accepted by God? No, because our acquittal is not based on obeying the law. It is based on faith. 28 So we are made right with God through faith and not by obeying the law.

29 After all, is God the God of the Jews only? Isn’t he also the God of the Gentiles? Of course he is. 30 There is only one God, and he makes people right with himself only by faith, whether they are Jews or Gentiles.[j] 31 Well then, if we emphasize faith, does this mean that we can forget about the law? Of course not! In fact, only when we have faith do we truly fulfill the law.

Q

Saving Faith: All have sinned

A

Romans 5:12
12 When Adam sinned, sin entered the world. Adam’s sin brought death, so death spread to everyone, for everyone sinned.

Romans 3:23
23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,

Isaiah 53:6
We all, like sheep, have gone astray, each of us has turned to our own way;
and the Lord has laid on him, the iniquity of us all.

Romans 6:23
23 For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life through Christ Jesus our Lord.

Q

What enables Christians to live the Christian life?

A

God doesn’t just save us and then leave us, God has given us “all things that pertains to life and godliness” 2 Peter 1:3,

God has given us His spirit, and His word which enables us to become “partakers of the divine nature”,

Being partakers of the divine nature is to develop the character qualities of christ-likeness, namely: saving faith, virtue, knowledge, self-control, preserverance, godliness, brotherly-affection, and love.

Isaiah 41:10 Don’t be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be discouraged, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you. I will hold you up with my victorious right hand.

Hebrews 13:5 “for God has said, “I will never forsake you or abandon you.”

Hebrew 13:6 “6 Therefore, we can say with confidence: “The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid. What can anyone do to me?”

Q

Virtue: What is it?

A

Virtue is “moral exellence” or goodness. It is the nature and character of Christ. Peter is saying, that the first step to Christ-likeness, is the desire and commitment to become like Jesus

Adding virtue means being commited to developing and displaying the Character of Jesus Christ.

Part of overcoming life-dominating sin, is choosing the right Goal, which is to become like Christ

Virtue Prayer

A

Lord Jesus, because of what you have done in my place on the cross.
And because of what you have said to me in your word.
And because of what you will require of me at the judgment.
I commit myself to becoming more like you today.

Q

Knowledge: Why is it so important to add knowledge?

A

Without an understanding of God’s laws, our journey to freedom and maturity will be a long, slow and painful one.

130 The unfolding of your words gives light;
it gives understanding to the simple.

105 Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path.

45 I will walk about in freedom,
for I have sought out your precepts.

4 You have laid down precepts
that are to be fully obeyed. - Psalm 119:4

89 Your word, Lord, is eternal;
it stands firm in the heavens.

59 I have considered my ways
and have turned my steps to your statutes.
60 I will hasten and not delay
to obey your commands.

Q

Knowledge: How are we to study the word of God?

A

According to Psalm 119, we are to:

Value the word of God above all else

  1. The law from your mouth is more precious to me
than thousands of pieces of silver and gold.

Ask God through prayer to give us understanding

12 Praise be to you, Lord;
teach me your decrees.

18 Open my eyes that I may see
wonderful things in your law.

Be willing and ready to obey

33 Teach me, Lord, the way of your decrees,
that I may follow it to the end.[b]
34 Give me understanding, so that I may keep your law
and obey it with all my heart.

Memorize Scripture:

11 I have hidden your word in my heart
that I might not sin against you.

Recall and Recite Scripture

13 With my lips I recount
all the laws that come from your mouth.

Reflect deeply on the meaning of word of God:

  1. Oh, how I love your law!
I meditate on it all day long.

15 I meditate on your precepts
and consider your ways.

59 I have considered my ways
and have turned my steps to your statutes.
60 I will hasten and not delay
to obey your commands.

Preserverance: How do we preservere during difficult times.

A

Psalm 109 tells us, we preservere by:

  1. Holding to God’s promises
  2. My comfort in my suffering is this:
    Your promise preserves my life.
  3. By delighting in God’s word
  4. If your law had not been my delight,
I would have perished in my affliction.

Q

Knowledge: The hardened heart

A

A heart that delights in the law of God, that is willing to “do” the will of God. Is a prerequisite to understanding the word of God.

Their hearts are callous and unfeeling, but I delight in your law. - Psalm 119:70

42 Jesus told them, “If God were your Father, you would love me, because I have come to you from God. I am not here on my own, but he sent me. 45 So when I tell the truth, you just naturally don’t believe me! 46 Which of you can truthfully accuse me of sin? And since I am telling you the truth, why don’t you believe me? 47 Anyone who belongs to God listens gladly to the words of God. But you don’t listen because you don’t belong to God. - John 8:42-47

14 This fulfills the prophecy of Isaiah that says, ‘When you hear what I say, you will not understand. When you see what I do, you will not comprehend. 15 For the hearts of these people are hardened, and their ears cannot hear, and they have closed their eyes so their eyes cannot see, and their ears cannot hear, and their hearts cannot understand, and they cannot turn to me and let me heal them.’ - Mattew 13:14 -15

Self-Control

A

It is not about pullng yourself up by your own bootstraps, or about gridding your teeth and hanging on

Self-control is instantly obeying God’s word, in the power of God’s Spirit

59 I have considered my ways
and have turned my steps to your statutes.
60 I will hasten and not delay
to obey your commands. - Psalm 119:59-60

Self-Control: Slaves to sin

A

Romans 6:19

19 Because of the weakness of your human nature, I am using the illustration of slavery to help you understand all this. Previously, you let yourselves be slaves to impurity and lawlessness, which led ever deeper into sin. Now you must give yourselves to be slaves to righteous living so that you will become holy. - Romans 6:19

When we sin we become a slave to sin [wickedness, impurity, lawlessness]. Now that we belong to God, we should no longer sin, but live holy lives

Self-Control: Why should we obey INSTANTLY

A

Because if we delay obedience and procrastinate, we end up doing the wrong thing.

20
Q

Romans 6:23

A

For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

21
Q

Self-Control: How to break our slavery to sin?

A

Romans 6:16-17

16 Don’t you realize that you become the slave of whatever you choose to obey? You can be a slave to sin, which leads to death, or you can choose to obey God, which leads to righteous living. 17 Thank God! Once you were slaves of sin, but now you wholeheartedly obey this teaching we have given you.

Galations 5:16

So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.

We break the chains of slavery to sin, through obedience to the word of God, in the power of God’s Spirit, which is called “Walking in the Spriit”

22
Q

Self-Control: Can Christians continue to sin -Reap what you Sow

A

God promises to replace the harvest of destruction with a harvest with great blessing when we choose to obey his word, but if we continue to disobey, we will reap a harvest of pain and destruction.

Galations 6: 7 - 9

[NLT]

7 Don’t be misled—you cannot mock the justice of God. You will always harvest what you plant. 8 Those who live only to satisfy their own sinful nature will harvest decay and death from that sinful nature. But those who live to please the Spirit will harvest everlasting life from the Spirit. 9 So let’s not get tired of doing what is good. At just the right time we will reap a harvest of blessing if we don’t give up.

[NIV]

7 Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows. 8 Whoever sows to please their flesh, from the flesh will reap destruction; whoever sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will reap eternal life. 9 Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.

23
Q

Biblical Change

A

The process whereby the Spirit of God, uses the Word of God, to make you like the Son of God.

24
Q

Endurance:What is it?

A

Continueing to obey God’s word in the power of God’s spirit, NO MATTER WHAT! It is self-control that remains faithful to doing what is right, even when under pressure or while facing persecution.

25
Q

Endurance: How to endure?

A

We endure, by considering what and how Christ endured…the scorn, the shame, the humiliation, the ignorance, the false accusations, the cross.

By considering the “Joy set before us”

Hebrews 12:1-3

1 Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, 2 fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer [Author] and perfecter [Finisher] of our faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. 3 Consider him who endured such opposition from sinners, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.

26
Q

Edurance: How do we endure God’s discipline?

A

By reminding ourselves of what Hebrews 12 tells us

God’s discipline is evidence of:

  • God’s love for us

6 “My son, do not make light of the Lord’s discipline, and do not lose heart when he rebukes you, because the Lord disciplines the one he loves, and he chastens everyone he accepts as his son.”

  • That we are sons of God

7 Endure hardship as discipline; God is treating you as his children. For what children are not disciplined by their father? 8 If you are not disciplined—and everyone undergoes discipline—then you are not legitimate, not true sons and daughters at all.

God disciplines us so that we may:

  • Share in His holiness:

10 They disciplined us for a little while as they thought best; but God disciplines us for our good, in order that we may share in his holiness.

  • Bear Fruit through training in rightiousness.

11 No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it.

27
Q

Endurance: Practical ways to build endurance

A
  1. Develop habits of bible reading and prayer
  2. Fellowship with believers and spiritual mentors
  3. Eliminate negative influences
28
Q

Endurance: Removing Negative Influences

A

It is not enough to just stop sinning, we need to be pro-active about removing those things from our life that tempts us or cause us to sin.

example: A drug addict needs to not just stop doing drugs, but also be proactive in removing any and all influences that could tempt him into doing drugs. He needs to avoid places, and situations where drugs are easily available, and break off his relationships with people who are in active addiction. For it is much better to lose friends, or even a Job, than what it is to go to hell because of your sin.

Matthew 5: 27-30

27 “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’ 28 But I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lustful intent has already committed adultery with her in his heart. 29 If your right eye causes you to sin, tear it out and throw it away. For it is better that you lose one of your members than that your whole body be thrown into hell. 30 And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. For it is better that you lose one of your members than that your whole body go into hell.

1 Corinthians 15:33

33 Do not be misled: “Bad company corrupts good character.”

Psalm 119:115
115 Away from me, you evildoers, that I may keep the commands of my God!

29
Q

Is Change Possible?

A

The members of the early church in Corinth struggled with “life-dominating” sins of all kinds, some struggled with homosexuality, others with addiction or drunkeness, but Paul tells us that they overcame their sin, he says “ Some of you were once like that, but you were cleansed”. He tells us that they overcame their sin by “calling on the name of Jesus”, and by the power of the Holy Spirit.

1 Corinthians 6

9 Don’t you realize that those who do wrong will not inherit the Kingdom of God? Don’t fool yourselves. Those who indulge in sexual sin, or who worship idols, or commit adultery, or are male prostitutes, or practice homosexuality, 10 or are thieves, or greedy people, or drunkards, or are abusive, or cheat people—none of these will inherit the Kingdom of God. 11 Some of you were once like that. But you were cleansed; you were made holy; you were made right with God by calling on the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.

Change is possible because changes who and what we are

2 Corinthians 5:17

17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.

30
Q

Do we need relief?

A

No, our main need is not for relief, but for growth. We need a change of character if we are to have relief. The pain and misery of our choices is often God’s way of reminding us that we have stepped of His path when we tried handling life on our own terms.

31
Q

Proverbs 3:5-7

A

Proverbs 3:5-7

5 Trust in the Lord with all your heart,
And lean not on your own understanding;
6 In all your ways acknowledge Him,
And He shall [a]direct your paths.
7 Do not be wise in your own eyes;
Fear the Lord and depart from evil.

32
Q

Godliness: What is it?

A

Loving God with all your heart, and promoting and defending what is important to Him

It means that whatever issue you face, you will take the same side as God on that issue. If God is against it, you will be against it. If God is for it, you will be for it.

It means when someone does wrong, you don’t join with them in their wrong doing, but if possible you try to stop the wrong doing.

1 Timothy 4:7 tells us to discipline ourselves for the purpose of godliness

7 Have nothing to do with godless myths and old wives’ tales; rather, train yourself to be godly. -1 Timothy 4:7

33
Q

Personal and Social Virtues

A

Personal Virtues: Loving God with All your heart, soul, and strength
- Saving Faith, Virtue, Knowledge, self-control, preservence, and godliness.

Social Virtues: Loving Others like yourself
- Brotherly kindness, and love.

The Personal Virtues, enable the Social virtues, for you cannot love others if you don’t have self-control and preservance.

34
Q

Godliness: Persecution

A

2 Timothy 3:12

12 Yes, and everyone who wants to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will suffer persecution.

35
Q

Godliness: Courage

A

Courage is taking principled action regardless of the risk. Not willing to stand on the side lines, but having the courage to do something about it, even at great personal risk.

36
Q

Godliness: David and Goliath

A

David was not a member of the army, but he couldnt stand by allow God to be mocked by the phillistines. While the soldiers of Isreal were affraid to fight because Goliath was too big, David fought because the Giant was too blasphemous. David didn’t care about his own life or safety, He cared about God’s reputation.

1 Samuel 7:45

45 David said to the Philistine, “You come against me with sword and spear and javelin, but I come against you in the name of the Lord Almighty, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied.

37
Q

What happens when you are born again?

A
  1. You are adopted into God’s family

John 1:12
12 But as many as received Him, to them He gave the [a]right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name:

  1. You become a new creation, with new desires, thoughts, and behaviours

Ezekiel 36:26-27
26 I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you; I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh. 27 And I will put my Spirit in you and move you to follow my decrees and be careful to keep my laws.

2 Corinthians 5:17
17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.

  1. Christ lives through you.

Galations 2:20
20 I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.

38
Q

Brotherly Kindness: What is it?

A

Christians are all spiritual family

John 1:12
12 But as many as received Him, to them He gave the [a]right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name:

We should treat eachother as family, in accordance with the “one another” verses

All the 59 “one anohter” verses can divided into 4 themes

Love One Another
Unity with One Another
Servanthood and Humility Toward One Another
Encouragement and Edification For One Another

39
Q

Brohterly Kindness: The role of self-control, preserverance, and godliness

A

You cannot love others when you lack self-control, preserverence, and godliness

It takes great self-control, the immediate obedience to God’s word in the power of God’s spirit, in order to love others when they are selfish and when they harm you.

It takes great preserverence to do so continuously

40
Q

Brotherly kindness: Love One Another

A

John 13:34-35
“A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”

1 John 4:20
20 If someone says, “I love God,” but hates a fellow believer,[a] that person is a liar; for if we don’t love people we can see, how can we love God, whom we cannot see?

1 Peter 4:8
8 Most important of all, continue to show deep love for each other, for love covers a multitude of sins.

Romans 12:10
10 Be kindly affectionate to one another with brotherly love, in honor giving preference to one another;

41
Q

Brotherly kindness: Unity with one another

A

1 Corinthians 1:10
10 I appeal to you, dear brothers and sisters,[a] by the authority of our Lord Jesus Christ, to live in harmony with each other. Let there be no divisions in the church. Rather, be of one mind, united in thought and purpose.

Romans 15:7
7 Therefore, accept each other just as Christ has accepted you so that God will be given glory.

James 5:9
9 Don’t grumble against one another, brothers and sisters, or you will be judged. The Judge is standing at the door!

Romans 14:13 - Don’t divide over secondary issues

13 Therefore let us stop passing judgment on one another. Instead, make up your mind not to put any stumbling block or obstacle in the way of a brother or sister.

17 For the kingdom of God is not a matter of eating and drinking, but of righteousness, peace and joy in the Holy Spirit,
….
19 Let us therefore make every effort to do what leads to peace and to mutual edification. 20 Do not destroy the work of God for the sake of food. All food is clean, but it is wrong for a person to eat anything that causes someone else to stumble. 21 It is better not to eat meat or drink wine or to do anything else that will cause your brother or sister to fall.

Galations 5:26
26 Let us not become conceited, or provoke one another, or be jealous of one another.

Collosians 3:13
13 Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you.

Brotherly kindness: Serve one another in humility

A

Philippians 2:5-8
5 In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus:
6 Who, being in very nature[a] God,
did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage;
7 rather, he made himself nothing
by taking the very nature[b] of a servant,
being made in human likeness.
8 And being found in appearance as a man,
he humbled himself
by becoming obedient to death—
even death on a cross!

Phillipians 2:3-4
3 Let nothing be done through selfish ambition or conceit, but in lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than himself. 4 Let each of you look out not only for his own interests, but also for the interests of others.

John 13:14-15
14 Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet. 15 I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you.

Galations 6:2
2 Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.

Love: God’s definition

A

Not fickle or fleeting, but stable, self-sacrificing, and includes a goal to make a spiritual difference in someones life. Utlimately, adding love means: sacrificing to meet the spiritual needs of others. Christ and the Apostles sacrficed their lives so that others could hear the Gospel.

1 Corinthians 13:4-8

4 Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. 5 It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. 6 Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. 7 It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. 8 Love never fails.

Love: God’s Sacrificial love for us

A

John 3:16
16 For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.

Romans 5:8
8 But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

John 15:12
12 This is my commandment: Love each other in the same way I have loved you. 13 There is no greater love than to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.

Q

Love: Why do we need an objective definition of love

A

Love is an objective reality, and without an understanidng of what love is, we will default to a subjective definition based on our own feelings and desires. When this happens, love becomes narcisistic, manipulative, and confused.

  1. self-centered : Narcisism

a love based on self-esteem: “You make me feel special.” “You understand me.” “You make me feel important.” “You serve me in such thoughtful and intentional ways.” And don’t forget the heartfelt, “You complete me.”

This kind of love disapears whenever the relationsihp begins to deflate your self-esteem, or you begin to feel dimished. Usually when someone calls you out on your BS, or when your partner begins to surpass you in someway, then love gives way to envy, jealousy, anger, even hatred.

  1. feeling-centered: Infatuation

based on warm and fuzzy feelings “When I’m around you, I feel giddy”; or, “When I’m with you, I feel warm and safe.” Unfortunately, such love can disappear in a flash or slowly dissipate like air from a tire with a slow leak—“The love is gone. I’m not feeling it anymore.”

  1. Transactional: Manipulation

We all love in response to being loved. When we receive love, something stirs within us. “I love you because you treat me so well.” Or, “I can’t help but love you, given all you have done for me.” This is well and good, but the reverse can also be true: sometimes we love to be loved. We might hear “I will shower her with gifts so that she will love me.” Or, “The way to a man’s heart is through his belly.” There is an obvious downside to such manipulative, transactional love. We stop loving when we’re not loved. It sounds like this: “I can never love you again, given what you did.” Or, “You don’t love me, why should I love you?” Others will understand love from a sacrificial perspective, seeing it as the commitment to serve another regardless of their failures or the circumstances. Most wedding vows contain this sentiment. The thought that someone will love you “for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health,” can move you to tears.

Q

Love: The problem with the post-modern definition of love as being subjective

A

Love is not purely subjective, it is a universal reality, it can be objectively known and experienced, no matter your gender, age, race, ethnicity, culture, or circumstance. In other words, what’s true for you is also true for me. Given our unique personalities and stories, we do experience love in differing ways, but our experiences are bounded by a set spectrum of possibilities.
