Functional limitation within the individual caused by physical, mental or sensory impairment
What is a Disablement/Disability?
The loss or limitation of opportunities to take part in the normal life of the community on an equal level with others due to physical or social barriers
What does the Medical Model of Disability argue the problem is? Name examples
Problem: Disabled individual
Examples: can’t walk/talk/see, special institutions/ transport/schools, need medical professionals
What does the Charity Model of Disability argue the problem is? Name examples

Examples: need to be looked after, better/twisted/ aggressive, need help/charities/sympathy/special services/ schools, brave/courageous/inspirational, sad/tragic
What does the Social Model of Disability argue the problem is? Name examples
Problem: Disabling society
Examples: prejudice/discrimination, no jobs, poverty and economic dependency, no rights, isolation/segregation, inaccessibly transport/buildings
