What is the marxist view of disability?
The idea of disabled people as an economic burden originated in the industrial revolution as capitalism assigns worth based on a person’s ability to work (Finkelstein).
What are some theories on disability?
Watson - Disabled people learn helplessness - they become dependent because people expect them to be (see Labelling Theory)
Longmore - In mass media, disabled people are portrayed as either monsters and inhuman or as objects of pity and charity
Anderson and Kitchin - Disabled people are discouraged from having sex (family planning clinics in Northern Ireland)
Olney and Kim - Disabled people reject medical labels and have positive self-image
