Dose dextrose for hypoglycaemia?
Dextrose 10% 5ml/kg ivi
If known alcohol user, give thiamine 100mg IM/IV before dextrose
Recheck in 15 min, if still <3 give further 2ml/kg
Once >3, Continue dextrose 5% 1L IVI 6hrly
How to mix 10% dextrose:
- take the desired % solution (eg 10%) and divide this by the undiluted injection (50%) =0.2
- multiply this by the volume of fluid in your bag in ml (ie 250ml) = 50
- this is the amount to add to bag. Ie remove 50ml of NS and replace with 50ml 50% dextrose = 10% dextrose.
