Directional Terms
Imaginary vertical line down middle of body
Midline
Toward the MIDLINE or middle of the body.
MEDIAL
Toward the SIDE of the body.
LATERAL
ABOVE; towards the Head (or cranial)
SUPERIOR
BELOW; Towards the foot, or away from the head (also Caudal)
INFERIOR
FRONT; Toward the front of the body
ANTERIOR
BACK; Towards the back of the body
POSTERIOR
Involves one side of the body
UNILATERAL
Involving both sides of the body
BILATERAL
Towards the trunk; NEAR the Origin.
PROXIMAL
Away from the trunk; FAR fromt he origin
DISTAL

CLOSER to the surface of the body
SUPERFICIAL
AWAY from the surface of the body
DEEP
