SUPERIOR
Towards the top of structure/body. A structure above another. Example: the lungs are superior to the stomach.
INFERIOR
Towards the bottom of the structure/body. Beneath of another structure (towards the feet). Example: The stomach is inferior to the lungs.
SUPERFICIAL
Towards or on the surface.
DEEP
Deep into the tissues.
ANTERIOR (VENTRAL)
The front of the body, “anterior view”. Example: the sternum is anterior to the heart.
POSTERIOR (DORSAL)
The back of the body, “posterior view”. Example: the heart is posterior to the sternum.
POSTERIOR (DORSAL)
Towards the back of the body, “posterior view”. Example: the heart is posterior to the sternum.
MEDIAL
Towards the middle line of the body. Example: the nose its medial to the cheeks.
LATERAL
Away from the middle line of the body. Example: the cheek is lateral to nose.
PROXIMAL
Closer to the point of attachment to the body than another structure. Example: the wrist is proximal to the hand.
DISTAL
Away from the point of attachment. Example: the elbow is distal to the shoulder.
