dimensions/types of family diversity Flashcards
explain organizational diversity as a type of family diversity
-This is the different ways in which roles and responsibilities are distributed within families the diversity comes from different patterns of work both within and outside the home and from changing patterns of divorce and marriage.
- Traditionally men have been wage earners and women stayed at home looking after the children.
-
Explain social class diversity
This refers to social class variations in the quality of family relationships and lifestyles.
-E.g;
-Single parents are more likely to have working class origins
- Working class adult relationships are segregated - female role focuses on home and children , male role focuses on paid work.
- Lareau (2003) suggests that parents of different classes interact with their children in different ways.
-Some sociologists argue that middle class parents are more child centered than working class parents. They take on greater interest in their children’s education and pass on cultural advantages in terms of attitudes , values and practices.
-Extended family kinship ties are more important to the upper class in their attempt to maintain wealth and privilege . They use marriage and family connections to ensure social closure.
-Rapoport et al. (1982) suggest that there may be differences between middle-class and working-class families in terms of the relationship between husband and wife and the way in which children are socialized and disciplined
Explain cultural and ethnic diversity
-Differences in the lifestyles of families of different ethnic origins and religious beliefs.
-Differences are found in family size. Different ethnicities have greater or lesser number of children and extended family members.
- Dale et al (2004) found that African , caribbean and Black British women were more likely to work full time throughout the period of raising a family than other ethnic groups.
Where as in Britain’s Asian minorities indian women generally move to part time paid employment once they have a partner.
-Berthoud (2000) found that features of Afro-Caribbean families in the uk were low rates of marriage and high rates of single parenthood. Due to this high proportions of Afro-Caribbean children than of other ethnic groups did not have their father living with them.
