Mechanism
A
- Inhibits vestibular (labyrinth) stimulation from motion.
* Inhibits cholinergic stimulation in vestibular and reticular systems, which may cause nausea and vomiting.

Indications
A
- Known sensitivity to DimenhyDRINATE, DyphenhyDRAMINE or caffeine derivatives.
- < 12 years old

Cautions
A
- Increased intraocular pressure / glaucoma.
- Prostatic hyperplasia and urinary obstruction.
- Cardiovascular disease (ischemic heart disease and hypertension).
- Asthma/COPD.
- Elderly due to anticholinergic effect.
- Caution in pregnant women (risk/benefits).

Dose/Route
A
IM • 12.5mg, 25mg, 50mg IV • 1ml mixed with 9ml of saline • Given over 1 min • 12.5mg, 25mg, 50mg
Repeat once if required

Onset/duration
A
Almost immediate with IV injection; 3 to 6 hours.

Side Effects
A
CNS • Drowsiness • Ataxia (overdose) • Disorientation (overdose) • Excitement • Dizziness • Nausea • Lassitude CVS • Hypotension • Palpitations • Bradycardia/tachycardia GI • Dry mouth Respiratory • Thickening of bronchial secretions • Dry throat GU • Dysuria

Special considerations
A
- Most side effects are dose-related.
- Discontinue if exaggerated side effects occur.
- May impact the ability to conduct a neurological assessment and should be avoided in patients with head injury.
