Digitization and Digital Preservation Standards Flashcards

1
Q

Why digitize?

A

First, to preserve documents. Digitalization allows people to read older or unique documents without damaging the original. Second, to make the documents more accessible. Digitization allows more users to access the same document simultaneously and bring together scattered materials on a specific topic. Lastly, to reuse. Digitization convert documents into different formats and it helps the content to adapt in different purpose.

Q

Things to consider when digitizing

A

Document value (is it worth digitizing?), user demand (is there enough demand?), fit into collection(do the documents for a collection?), ease of digitization(how easy will it be to digitize?), number of pages (how many pages does it have to digitize?), copyright, security (what about the copyright and security?), particular request

Q

Issues and factors affecting preservation

A

Information carriers are preserved as objects and all of it disintegrates in time; only the speed of decay differs. In digital copying, each copy has the same quality. In analogue copying, each new generation of copy has decreased quality.
