What is a library?
A managed and organized collection of information resources, of all kinds, with services provided so that the collection can be used effectively
What is a digital library?
It is a library without walls. It is computerized rather than physical which means information is stored in digital format and accessed over a computer network. It is an electronic information access system that offers the user a coherent view of an organized, selected and managed body of information.
What is a hybrid library?
A library that have both physical and digital collections and provide service both digitally and in a physical library place.
What is a library portal?
it is an interface to all digital information resources available to the library’s users
Types of repository
Digital repository and institutional repository
What is a digital repository
An organized store of digital information items
An organized store of digital information items
Digital Repository
Institutional Repository
A special kind of library, sometimes called open access archive. It is managed by an organization to make its own digital materials available

Institutional Repository
Important trends and technologies
DLMS, Digitization, Digital Preservation, Access rights, Metadata
A kind of software system which provides the functions for creating and managing a digital library collection, and providing services for the users service
DLMS
Converting print-on-paper resources to digital form, usually by scanning
Digitization
Information that was originally created in digital form
Born digital
Problems of Digital Preservation
Hardware and software or data getting out of date and corruption or deterioration of storage media over time
Solutions for the Problems of Digital Preservation
Technology preservation, emulation, migration
Making sure that all users have access to all the information which they are entitled to use, and no more
Access Rights
Problems in Digital Environment
Contents are usually licensed, not owned, different users may have access to different materials; and some digital resources are
‘composite’, drawn from different sources
Metadata
Literally ‘data about data’, information about information resources,
including the contents of digital libraries
Metadata Format
Dublin Core, PREMIS, OAI-PMH
A simple format with just 15 elements: title, subject, publisher, date, etc. - to describe a information item
Dublin Core
Used to encode information about the preservation and archiving of
digital material in repositories and digital libraries
PREMIS
Gives a framework by which metadata for different digital libraries and repositories can be combined and used together
OAI-PMH
Planning Steps
- Define need, purpose and user community
- Select and analyze source materials
- Determine digital library collection requirements and features
- Plan approach to digitization
- Determine resource requirements for project implementation
- Prepare implementation schedule and timeline
Why is planning important?
Planning for digital libraries and repositories helps identify tasks related to the creation of the digital library, develop strategies for handling these tasks, and determine resources required and a timeline for accomplishing these tasks.
Process of building a digital library
Collection Acquisition, Collection Management, Content Dissemination and provision of services
Electronic formats suitable for digital library material
RTF, HTML, PDF, MPEG, JPEG
Is a process in which a library gathers metadata records from other libraries and repositories, so that they can be searched as a part of the library’s own collection.
Harvesting
Importance of Institutional Repository
Institutional helps collecting, preserving, and sharing your institution’s digital content online. It increases the consistency of workflow and policies regarding the preservation and archival. It also increase the visibility of your institution
Five important examples of free, open source systems for managing digital libraries and repositories
Greenstone, DSpace, Eprints, Fedora, WebAGRIS
