What is the digital revolution ?
- Rapid advances in technology which have transformed lives
- Society has moved to being based on digital technology and communication
- All information is now created by technology and the ways its stored has changed
- However some people are unable to access digital communication
- 2 types of new media
According to the digital revolution what are the 2 types of new media ?
- Extension of existing platforms (online newspapers, Tv On-demand)
- New media = new platforms (phones, laptops, apps)
What is the global village ?
- McLuhan
- There is an increasing amount of communication which isn’t face-to-face
- The world is becoming smaller (distance and time is decreasing)
- People can create and maintain social relationships easily
- People can maintain their interests by creating relationships
What are virtual communities ?
- Social network of individuals may/ may not reflect their offline lives
- Makes communities increasingly complex
- Allows people to share interests and alter their identities

- online chat rooms
- virtual worlds
- social networks

What are the advantages of virtual communities ?
- people can meet people they never would have met
- create relationships that can be extended to the real world
What are the disadvantages of virtual communities ?
- Unable to control the crime that happens
- difficult to keep activities under control
What are social networks ?
- social networks are networks of people
E.g.: - Friend groups
- work groups
- family networks
- interests
How do social networks shape communication ?
- Networks lead to increased communication with other forms than face-to-face
- this increases online communication
How has the digital revolution influenced social networks ?
- New Media has made networking easier
- This increases the range of networks one person has and the way they communicate
- different networks use different forms of media
What is the networked global society ?
- In a post-industrial society, the focus is on information as a result of new forms of communication
- Those with access to this information creates social networks
- this results in greater employability and status

- A whole range of media can be accessed from one device

- Large sets of data being analysed to show patterns and trends linking to human behaviours and interactions

Any form of digitally based platform for making, conforming or developing social networks which have a global reach.
