Q

What are the two ways WANS are provided connectivity for?

A

Some organizations launch their own satellites to provide connectivity for their global wans.
Other WAN’s choose to rely with a third party telecommunications company to provide them with connectivity, often linking LAN’s together through the internet.

Q

Hotspot is available on any host device and is installed for free on the device- why is this statement wrong?

A

Mobile network providers can enable or disable tethering as part of the service agreement.
Some network providers charge more for this feature to be enabled

Q

What are the two main uses of wired and wireless methods to transfer data?

A

Networking and connecting peripherals.

14
Q

In terms of technology used how are wired and wireless methods different from each other.

A

Wired methods use electric signals.
Wireless methods use radio waves.

15
Q

In terms of technology used how are satellites and broadcasting similar.

A

They both uses radio waves.

16
Q

What are the 4 uses of satellites

A

GPS, military, television, telephone

17
Q

What are the two uses of broadcasting?

A

Tv shows, radio shows.

18
Q

What are satellites used for?

A

To transmit data to and receive data from digital devices.

19
Q

Why do some digital devices have antennae?

A

To receive the radio signals that satellites transmit.

20
Q

What the two benefits of satellite communication?

A

The number of satellites orbiting across the planet means that the system is always available.
It also cannot be affected by power shortages.

21
Q

What are two draw backs of satellite communication?

A

Satellite signals do not pass through solid objects and wont work in areas like tunnels.

Can be affected by atmospheric weather conditions such as heavy rain or snow.

22
Q

how are satellite connections linked to GPSs

A

A network of 24 satellites orbiting Earth are the ones that send GPS signals.

23
Q

How does navigation aid make use of GPS-

A

They make use of GPS to calculate the exact location of the device.

24
Q

Describe how satellites can be used to calculate an accurate location of the device.

A

A network of 24 satellites orbiting the planet send GPS signals. At any given time a device is within the view of approximately 12 of those satellites. However only 4 of those satellites are required to calculate an accurate location.

25
Q

What is the internationally accepted standard method of broadcasting digital television.

A

Digital video broadcasting.

26
Q

What is DVBS

A

Digital video broadcasting satellites.

27
Q

How DVBS work?

A

A broadcaster using a large antenna transmits a video signal to one or more of those orbiting satellites.
That satellite then broadcasts it back down to the Earth.
A satellite television viewer will have an antenna installed which will receive this signal and send it to a set top box. The set top box decodes this signal and converts it so that it is ready to be sent to a television.

28
Q

How do some modern satellite televisions by pass the component of a set top box when receiving satellite signals.

A

Some televisions have decoders installed, so the antenna can be connected directly to the television rather than requiring a set top box to decode a signal first.

29
Q

What are the two newer digital broadcasting standards?

A

DVB-S2 and DVB-S2X

30
Q

How do the two newer digital broadcasting standards provide additional functionality (3 examples)

A

HDTV
Interactive service
Internet access

31
Q

How can satellite connections and telephones be linked?

A

Satellite communication is also used to allow people in remote areas to place voice calls using satellite phones.

31
Q

How are telephones that use satellite connection to communicate, useful

A

Satellite communication is also used to allow people in remote areas to place voice calls using satellite phones.

31
Q

How can satellite connections and telephones be linked?

A

Satellite communication is also used to allow people in remote areas to place voice calls using satellite phones.

32
Q

In what two ways are satellite phones different from normal phones?

A

Satellite phones are mainly used in remote areas.
Satellite phones use external
antennae to transmit data to and receive data from one or more satellites.

33
Q

What do the military in many countries use satellites for communications systems as?

A

Global command and control system.

34
Q

What do the global command and control system provide.

A

Military communication.
