Digital Basics Flashcards
What is sampling?
The process of are taking snapshots of sound waves at a regular time interval.
What is quantization?
The number of available values determined by the number of bits (0’s and 1’s) used for each sample, also called bit depth
What is the relationship between the number of pixels, resolution and file size?
More pixels = better resolution = larger file size
How do you reduce the size of a file?
Compression
What is the difference between vector and bitmap graphics?
Vector: non-pixelated, computer-generated images made up of lines, curves, points, and shapes that are defined by mathematical formulas
Bitmap: grid of pixels to represent an image
Types of file formats : .ai
a vector image file created with adobe illustrator, AI files are made up of paths connected by points, rather than pixels, can scale without loss of quality
Difference between uncompressed, lossless compression, and lossy compressed file formats?
Uncompressed: original form
Lossless: temporary reduction in file size
Lossy: permanent reduction in file size
file format: .aiff
audio interchange file format, a popular audio file format used in professional audio and video application. files are uncompressed which means they maintain high audio quality but takes up more space
file format: .acc
a digital audio field hat uses the advanced audio coding, standard to compress audio data
file format: .gif
graphics interchange format, is a type of bitmap image file format that can support basic images and animations
file format: .indd
File format is used by Adobe InDesign.
Characteristics:Layout and document based, page design, and text handling.
Uses: Print publishing, editorial design, interactive PDFs, and digital publishing.
file format : .jpg
File format is one of the most commonly used image formats.
Characteristics: Lossy compression, 24-bit color, loss of detail in repeated saves, no layers, and standardized format.
Uses: Photographs, web images, social media, email attachments, image storage, printing, and limited graphic design.
file format: ..mp3 - lossy audio
an audio coding format which uses a form of lossy data compression to reduce file sizes significantly, typically by a factor of 10, in comparison with a CD, yet still sound like the original uncompressed audio to most listeners. This is important for both transmission and storage concerns.
file format: .mp4 -
The video container standard for multimedia on the Internet. Coupled with the H.264 codec it delivers very high quality video content at much reduced file sizes.
file format: .mov
Apple’s QuickTime multimedia container file.
