Digestive System: Quiz 1 Flashcards
Oral Cavity
a space bordered in front by the mouth, behind the oropharynx, and on the sides by the inner wall of the cheeks. Helps with eating and chewing.
Hard Palate
composed of the palatine processes of the maxillae and palatine bones, helps form the roof of the oral cavity. Provides space for the tongue to move freely.
Soft Palate
composed of the connective tissue and a mucous membrane. Helps form the roof of the oral cavity. elevates the nasopharynx.
Uvula
small grape like structure suspended from the posterior edge of the soft palate. helps prevent food or liquid from moving into the nasal cavity during swallowing.
Lips
aka: Labia; protect the anterior opening of the mouth
Tongue
Made of skeletal muscle, important in speech, taste, and the movement of food toward the teeth for chewing and swallowing.
4 Sections of Tongue
Lingual Frenulum, Labial Frenulum, Papilae, Tastebud
Lingual Frenulum
thin mucous membrane that holds the tongue to the floor of the mouth
Labial Frenulum
holds lips to gingiva of mouth; thin mucous membrane
Papilae
raised areas on the tongue, increase frictional surface of the tongue
Tastebud
occur on the tongue on the sides of the papillae, sense of taste
Teeth
2-1-2-3 (adults) 2-1-0-2 (children)
4 Sections of Teeth
Incisors, Canine, Premolars, Molars
Incisors
flat, bladelike front teeth that serve to nip food
Canine
pointed teeth that function in shearing food
Premolars
serve to grind food
Molars
grind food
Pharynx
membrane-lined cavity behind the nose and mouth; connects mouth to esophagus
4 Sections of Pharynx
Nasopharynx, oropharynx, laryngopharynx, palatine tonsils
Nasopharynx
above the oropharynx, leads to the nasal cavity. connects nasal passages to the respiratory system.
Oropharynx
space behind the oral cavity that serves as a common passageway for air, food, and water. passageway for air, food, and water.
Laryngopharynx
below the oropharynx, leads to the larynx and esophagus. passageway for air, food, and water.
Palatine Tonsils
paired masses of lymphatic tissue at the posterior end of the oral cavity
Larynx
hollow muscular organ that forms an air passage to the lungs; holds the vocal cords; surrounding by cartilage rings. Fight off bacteria that enters through the mouth and nose.
Digestive System Function
mechanical and chemical breakdown of food and absorption of nutrients, maintain homeostasis
Explain the 4 layers of the Alimentary Canal
Mucosa: protects tissue and carries absorption
Submucosa: glands, blood vessels, nerves
Muscular Layer: smooth muscle tissue, circular and longitudinal fiber, pushes food AKA peristalsis
Serosa: visceral peritoneum, outer covering of the tube, lubricates surfaces
