Digestion:
The physical and chemical break down of food so that your body can use it
Absorption:
The passage of the digested food from the digestive tract into the circulatory system
Elimination:
The removal of undigestable food or waste
The 3 digestive system functions:
- Digestion
- Absorption
- Elimination
The 2 kinds of changes in food:
- Physical - Chewing
- Chemical - Enzymatic breakdown
The 3 key mouth structures:
- Tongue - taste buds
- Teeth - chewing
- Salivary Glands - produces saliva
Pharynx:
The back of the throat where food is rolled into a Bolis and swallowed
Esophagus:
8-inch-long passage from the back of the throat to the stomach; where Perostalssi contraction occurs
Stomach:
Found beneath the Diaphragm but, above the waist; sized to hold a quart and contains hydrochloric acid but, lined with mucus
Small Intestines:
20-25 feet long; Main job is to digest and absorb
Liver:
The filter for toxins from the blood and makes bile
Gall Bladder:
Attached beneath the Liver and stores Bile
Large Intestine or Colon:
Absorbs water and stores waste; 5-6 feet long
Metabolism:
The rate at the body converts food into energy
Pyloric Valve:
Takes food from the stomach to the small intestine
