Digestive System & Associated Structures Flashcards
What are the 2 main portions of the oral cavity?
oral cavity proper
oral vestibule
What is the vestibule?
outside the teeth and gums
but inside the lips and cheeks
What are the boundaries of the oral cavity proper?
dorsal: hard and rostral-most part of soft palate
rostral/lateral: teeth and gums
ventral: tongue and associated mucosa
caudal: palatoglossal arch
Which boundary of the oral cavity proper has the palatoglossal arch?
caudal
What does brachydont mean?
short crown
What is the crown? It is covered by _______
exposed portion
covered by enamel
What is the root? It is covered by ______
below the gumline
covered by cement
What is the neck of the tooth?
where the crown and root meet
What is the pulp cavity/root canal?
contains the soft tissues of the tooth (sensory & autonomic nerves, vessels, etc)
What part of the tooth narrows with age?
the pulp cavity / root canal
What is the apical foramen?
narrow opening where the nerves/vessels enter/exit the roots
What is the periodontal ligament?
fibrous CT, anchors tooth into the alveolus
Label the diagram 1-7
1.crown
2.& 4. root
3.cement
5. pulp cavity / root canal
6. periodontal ligament
7. alveolus
** yellow inside root canal is the apical foramen
What are the outer and inner surfaces of the teeth?
outer: vestibular
inner: lingual/palatine
What are the contact surfaces of the teeth?
the surfaces which face adjacent teeth in the same dental arch
mesial vs distal
What is the occlusal surface?
the surface facing the opposite dental arch
