Esophagus
Tube that carries food from mouth to stomach
Stomach
Internal organ where major part of digestion of food takes place
Epiglottis
Flap of skin controlled by the brain. Can open and close and is able to prevent food from entering the trachea by mistake
Trachea
Also called windpipe, is a tube that carries air to the lungs
Small intestine
Where food enters after leaving the stomach. Adds more digestive enzymes that aid the body in breaking down and absorbing nutrients
Duodenum
First part of small intestine immediately beyond the stomach, where juices from liver and pancreas are added
Large intestine
Commonly referred to as the “bowel.” Where waste travels and leaves the body
Liver
Largest internal organ in the body. Carries out many complex jobs related to controlling what is in the blood
Bile
Digestive juice produced by the liver,
Gallbladder
A sac that empties bile into the small intestine to help break down fatty foods.
Cirrhosis
scarring of the liver
Gastroenteritis
inflammation of the lining of the intestines caused by a virus, bacteria, or parasites
Hepatitis
Inflammation of the liver
