Palatine tonsils
Large, oval masses of lymphoid tissue embedded in the lateral walls of the oral pharynx on either side between the pillars of the fauces

Ball at back of throat From Latin uva, meaning grape
Pharynx
-Throat -carries food/air -Channel for both air and food. -Upper part connects with the nose and mouth -Lower part connects with the larynx (voice box) and leads into the esophagus for swallowing
Epiglottis
Controlled by brain-prevent food from being swallowed wrong way If incorrectly swallowed-coughing
Adenoids
Two glands at the back of the nose above the tonsils - made of lymph node tissue that contain white cells to fight infection -part of bodies defense against respiratory tract infection
Tonsillectomy and/or adenoidectomy
Based on: 1) tonsils alone 2) adenoids alone 3) tonsils and adenoids 4) age 5) primary procedure 6) secondary procedure 7) primary or secondary procedure -usually on outpatient basis
Palatopharyngoplasty
Elongated/excessive tissue of the uvula, soft palate, and pharynx are removed -treatment for patients with severe sleep apnea
