Mechanical digestion
Use teeth and tongue to chew food into small pieces to swallow
Saliva
Produced from salivary glands and contains amylase
Chemical digestion
Amylase begins to break down complex carbohydrates into simple ones
Esophagus
Peristalsis is used to push through the esophagus to your stomach
Stomach
Gastric juice (hydrochloric acid, mucus, and enzymes) breaks down proteins and Bolus is broken down into chyme
Small intestine
Once chyme leaves the stomach empties into here. 6 m long and 2.5 cm in diameter. First metre called duodenum. Covered in villi
Pancreas
Produces digestive enzymes into small intestine breaks down carbohydrates, proteins, and fat in chyme
Liver
Produces bile breaks globs of fat into smaller droplets
Gallbladder
Where bile is stored
Villi
Increases surface area to take in nutrients.
Large intestine
Reabsorbs water and other minerals
Ingestion
Bite an apple or drink milk
