Salivary glands
Saliva is produced by the glands
It contains enzymes (chemicals which break up food)
Saliva breaks down starch into sugar
Mouth
Where digestion begins
The teeth grind up food
It mixes with saliva
Oesophagus/gullet
A tube connecting mouth and the stomach
The muscles contract and relax (peristalsis)
This pushes down the food
Stomach
Full of hydrochloric acid that is added to food
More saliva is added to break down protein into amino acids
Small intestine
Carbs are digested into sugars
Sugar and amino acids are absorbed into bloodstream in the small
Food substances are absorbed
Large intestine
Removed water from food that cannot be digested
Rectum
Non-digested food is turned into faeces(poo!!!)
It stored faeces here
Anus
Faeces is finally pushed out the anus
This is called elimination of egestion
How is it carried around the body
By the circulatory system
