Digestive system Flashcards
What is nutrients
An ingredient which nourishes the body
Ingestion
The intake of food by biting chewing and swallowing the food
Digestion
The chemical and mechanical process that converts food into soluble nutrients
Absorption
The soluble nutrients are taken up the bloodstream in the intestines
Egestion
Undigested and waste products get passed out of the body
Faeces
Waste material which is excreted through the anus
The main processes of digestive system
Injection-intake of food
Digestion -breakdown of large molecules
To make them smaller to be absorbed in the bloodstream . Begins in the mouth and stomach and small intestine with enzymes
Absorption -soluble in product of digestion transferred from the gut walls and surrounding blood vessels for Transport to cells
Egestion-undigested food is removed from body as faeces
Balance diet
Diet containing adequate amount of necessary nutrients for all food groups for healthy growth
Solvent
Liquid in which substance are dissolved to form a solution
Obesity
Excessive amount of body fat
Ulcers
Source in lining of mouth and intestine
Peristalsis
Rhythmic contraction of muscle layers in digestive canal that push the food forward
Enzymes
Protein proteins that speed up the rate of chemical reaction
Chemical digestion
Instead of breaking down food by chewing and crashing chemicals bring nutrients through chemical reactions
What are the three digestive enzymes
Lipase-made in pancreas and breaks down fat
Proteases-made in pancreas and breaks down protein
Amylase- made in mouth and pancreas
Breaks down complex carbohydrates
